Think?

There was a time when a person went to college and they knew that they would be employed after they graduated. People held jobs for long periods of time and enjoyed job security. There was a sense of loyalty between workers and employers. Those times do not exist anymore and these days there’s no guarantee that a student in university will be employed after graduation even though our universities have become factories that pump out graduates who fulfil requirements for businesses and simply become cogs in the modern economic system. There’s no guarantee of long term employment or job security. There’s no loyalty between employees and employers.

The modern day economic/industrial complex has created an uncertain and stressful environment for most of us. A worrisome consequence of such an uncertain environment is that it has robbed us of the ability to think about issues other than work. We are almost always occupied with worries relating to employment and financial issues. How many times do you think about whether you will have a job next month or what the future holds for you and your family? Who has time to think of anything else such as history, philosophy, injustice, genocide, war etc? All these things have become mere headlines that no one truly seems to care for.

Our lives have become so preoccupied with our professions that we don’t have time to think of much else. Sadly, I think that this is making us all ignorant and docile. Ever wonder how people don’t read much anymore? Even if they do read, they read snippets of information which hardly even represents the whole truth. Ever notice how people don’t protest much anymore? Who has time to protest when they are constantly being told by their employer that they should feel luck to even have a job?

It’s as if the whole system has been designed to keep our heads down, pay bills, spend money, and not think of anything else lest it disturb the oppressive economic status quo.
