The deed and the doer
I am currently reading Gandhi’s autobiography, ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’ and came across the following passage:
Man and his deed are two distinct things. Whereas good deed should call forth approbation and a wicket deed disapprobation, the doer of the deed, whether good or wicked, always deserves respect or pity as the case may be. ‘Hate the sin and not the sinner’ is a precept which, though easy enough to understand, is rarely practised, and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world.
Beautiful words but easier to understand than to practice. Perhaps it’s human nature that makes us petty and revengeful but it can also be overcome. Gandhi’s life is a good example.
